Next steps for The Prepared Expat!

When I started The Prepared Expat years ago, my goal was to provide high-quality information and training to help expats avoid the errors and challenges that I had faced in my life as an expat. Surely there were easier ways to meet so many of the challenges that I knew expats were facing. The attention this little blog has gotten, along with its ever-increasing subscribers/followers, has proven that I was not alone.

Expat life is hard for a thousand and one reasons, but it gets easier with good resources and gets even better with great communities of helpful expats. One of the greatest parts of writing here has been meeting so many of you and watching social media groups grow into legitimately helpful resources for each other!

After a restful Lunar New Year break, I wanted to update you on what you can expect from The Prepared Expat in 2025!

What’s changing

When I started The Prepared Expat, I had a job that was flexible enough and had few enough hours that I could write weekly. That was awesome. As you may have guessed by my use of the past tense in that last sentence, that has changed. I’m thrilled that I’ve started my own business in my host country and I’m so pumped about it. (If you care to know, I’ve started a language center where I help locals improve their English and help foreigners learn the local language). It’s exciting to take all that I’ve learned about language learning and apply it in my new business.

If you’ve started a business, though, let alone one overseas, you know that it is time-intensive, particularly in the startup phase. As I’ve evaluated things, I concluded there is simply no way to keep writing articles with the length and frequency I previously did while also starting up my business.

Don’t go anywhere!

All this means is that I don’t plan to write each week and I’ll allow myself to write articles that are shorter. Shorter-form articles should enable me to continue equipping you to survive and thrive as an expat while also enabling me and my family to survive and thrive in the new business!

What’s not changing

While the frequency and format of the articles will change, my commitment has not changed to bring you high-quality content to help you survive and thrive as an expat. I still hope this blog and its associated social media channels are your go-to place to ask a question about “how do I do ___?” as an expat.

Also, if you’re someone who has purchased a Prepared Expat Guide, consults with me, or has me on a consulting retainer, your access to those resources and benefits won’t change.

And the existing content at The Prepared Expat won’t change either! You may not know this, either, but I’m constantly updating and improving existing articles. If you follow The Prepared Expat, you may have seen some of those updates on ICYMI Tuesday. I love re-sharing classic or updated content with you that you may have missed. Those who follow or subscribe to the blog will continue to see these ICYMI articles.

That’s all for now! I look forward to continuing to serve you in a different way going forward, but with the same goal!

Happy expatting,

– Mark
