Money on the Move: How to Travel Safely with Cash

A few years ago, an expat friend of mine asked if I could transport some cash to our passport country, to which I was traveling. I agreed, not thinking much of it. Since we were both incredibly underpaid English teachers at that time, I expected that she would be sending only a few hundred dollars back with me. What she gave me was several thousand dollars, all in cash. I was paranoid during the trip, carrying the cash in my pocket to prevent it from being stolen. I was so nervous that I found it difficult to sleep on the long flight. I wasn’t robbed, but I wish I knew then what I know now.

There’s the introduction to an article I wrote for another website which I want to share with you today. The reality is that expats often have to travel with large amounts of cash on their person. I know people who regularly travel with up to $10,0001 and the thought of having that much cash on you at one time could be daunting.

The reality is, though, that it doesn’t have to be unsafe or cause as much consternation as it did for me. I was just unprepared. Now, I know better and am excited to share with you some hacks and advice for how to travel safely with large amounts of cash. In the article I cover why you might need to travel with lots of cash, how to do so safely, and how to store cash in a hotel room amidst your travels.

This article could literally save you thousands of dollars, so make sure to check it out: Money on the Move: How to Travel Safely with Cash.2

  1. Ok, so they do $9,980 for US customs purposes. One $20 bill short of the declaration limit. ↩︎
  2. The article is at a website called Survive Doomsday. I personally wouldn’t call myself a prepper, but I find that I can learn a lot from some of their thinking about preparedness. So, you don’t need to be a prepper to enjoy my article which is written for everyday expats. ↩︎
